Almost anything is great on a burger. Here’s one with a Middle Eastern flair, combining traditional toppings with a zesty hummus sauce.
INGREDIENTS:
SAUCE
- 8 ounces nonfat plain hummus (about 1 cup)
- 11⁄2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
- 1⁄4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1⁄8 to 1⁄4 teaspoon ground red pepper
- 1 pound ground beef (95% lean)
- 11⁄2 teaspoons Pepper-Herb Seasoning Mix (recipe follows) Salt, as desired
- 4 whole wheat hamburger buns, split
- 4 romaine lettuce leaves 1 medium tomato, cut into thin slices
- 1 small cucumber, cut into thin slices
PREPARATION:
1. Combine sauce ingredients in small saucepan. Cook and stir over medium heat about 8 minutes or until sauce is heated through. Set aside and keep warm.
2. Combine ground beef and seasoning mix in large bowl, mixing lightly but thoroughly. Lightly shape into four 1⁄2-inch-thick patties.
3. Heat large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Place patties in skillet; cook 10 to 12 minutes to medium (160°F) doneness, until no longer pink in center and juices show no pink color, turning once. Season with salt, as desired.
4. Line bottom of each bun with lettuce, tomato, and cucumber slices; top with burger and 2 tablespoons sauce. Close sandwiches. Serve with remaining sauce, if desired.
